Quality Musical Instrument Repair

Shop Organization & Cleanliness

Recently a link to our webcams was posted on a musicians' forum. A discussion followed about a variety of things ranging from, "Watching band instrument repair is like watching paint dry" to comments about the shop cleanliness and organization.
I had to laugh about the paint drying comment. I suppose watching flute and saxophone repair is like watching golf or fishing to me. Yet there are golf and fishing shows all over the TV channels. There are also hundreds of people a week that watch woodwind repair in the bench webcam. So, obviously, some are interested and some aren't.
The shop organization/cleanliness comment has been the source of heated debates among repair technicians. Some techs feel that 15 layers (and years) of clutter on their bench is like the stripes on a sergeant's uniform while others claim that they are just too busy to put things away. Personally, I don't care how busy we are....things get put away at the end of a job, at the end of a run of instruments or at the end of the day. While we don't keep things as clean and organized as I'd like (there is almost always a layer of dust, a pile of parts awaiting storage assignment, etc.) we do keep it at least presentable to the customer. I prefer to spend a few extra minutes putting things away and avoid the frustration of always searching for a tool or part.
When you're self employed efficiency can make a significant difference between paying the bills and not paying the bills or just paying the bills and making a decent living.
Besides....most of us spend more waking hours of our adult life at work than anywhere else. Why not keep it clean and a place to be proud of?
